Hundreds celebrate Candlemas

Hundreds gathered for a Festal Eucharist with 1,000 more watching at home, as the cathedral was lit by 10,000 candles. Candlemas celebrates the presentation of the infant Christ at the temple, where he was recognised by the old man Simeon as a light for all the world.

Celebrating Rural Life

A great celebration of rural life took place at our annual Plough Sunday Service, in partnership with the Yorkshire Agricultural Society - with an address by the Archbishop of York.

Vital role of farmers celebrated at Plough Sunday Service

The vital contribution of farmers to feeding the nation and managing the countryside is being celebrated at a special service supported by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.
All are welcome at the Plough Sunday Service on Sunday 11 January as blessings and thanks are offered to farming families, and an address is given by the Archbishop of York, The Most Rev Stephen Cottrell.

Canon Michael Writes

In the late 1980’s I attended a Selection Conference to enable the church to discern my perceived calling to the priesthood. One of the selection activities involved drawing a piece of paper from a hat, on which was written a question and then lead a 10-minute discussion on that question with others exploring their vocation.

Celebrating the Legacy of St Wilfrid

In 672 a visionary bishop named Wilfrid built a glorious church here - the crypt of which still remains. This autumn join us as we celebrate Wilfrid with great food and entertainment at Twilight in the Nave, fascinating lectures, worship and wonderful choral music. Details on our website.

Dean John Writes

This week we reflect on the joys and challenges of family life, welcoming new chorister families to the cathedral and exploring Jesus’s challenging words in Sunday’s gospel.
