Ripon Cathedral Artist in Residence
Ripon Cathedral is delighted to welcome award-winning artist Lewis Hazelwood-Horner as Artist in Residence this September. Known for his bold oil paintings and his ability to capture both landscape and industry, Lewis is inspired by Yorkshire’s people and places – and will be creating new work right here in the cathedral.
Launch Evening – Tuesday 2 September, 7.30pm
Join us for the official launch of Lewis’s exhibition. Admission is free, with a complimentary glass of wine on arrival. Lewis will introduce himself, share why Ripon and Yorkshire inspire his art, and talk about his passion for “bringing the outside inside.”
Residency & Artwork Raffle
Throughout the month, Lewis will be working on a new oil painting within the cathedral. Visitors will have the chance to watch the piece take shape and “look over his shoulder” as he paints. The completed artwork will be raffled on Sunday 28 September, with tickets available from the cathedral shop for £5 each. The draw will be made by the Dean of Ripon, the Very Rev’d John Dobson.
Outdoor Art Workshop – Saturday 13 September, 2–4pm
Lewis will also lead a hands-on art workshop in the cathedral grounds (with an indoor option if the weather turns). After a short demonstration in oils, Lewis will move among participants to offer encouragement and tips.
- Open to students (GCSE, FE, art projects), hobbyists, and anyone keen to try their hand at drawing or painting the Cathedral.
