Ripon International Festival: Orchestra of Opera North
Conductor: Janusz Piotrowicz
Wagner: Overture to Tannhäuser
Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites 1 & 2
Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”
Wagner’s overture is a musical artwork entire in itself: shimmering, mystical, it rises to a thrilling climax. Grieg’s exquisite incidental music opens with the wondrous ‘Morning’ and follows with the Death of Aase, Anitra’s Dance, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Solveig’s Song and other gems. Dvorak’s greatest work is brimming with imaginative melody, from tenderness to joy to tragedy, and features the poignant ‘Goin’ Home’ theme played on cor anglais. An evening of glorious music under the electrically charged baton of our Artistic Director: ‘a wonderful musician – he feels his music’ Hermann Baumann (Berlin Philharmonic)
